If you read my post about the essence of digital and have more questions, you have found the right place! I am going to classify some well-known objects as digital or non-digital to help you understand this concept as well as I do.
Let’s start with Non-Digital items (also known as analog). These objects are not defined by their “binary” form.
– Clay Tablets: Symbols were pressed into wet clay by hand. In the modern day, they have been digitized for museums and such. However, in their natural, historical form, they are non-digital.
– Mercury Thermometers: As the temperature rises, the mercury. moves up the thermometer. These work through fundamental chemistry (heating leads to physical expansion).
– Mechanical Clocks: The clock relies on gears, springs, and hands to represent the time, as opposed to electricity.
Now onto the fun part. Classifying digital stuff! Hooray!
– Word Documents: Information put into a Word document is stored in the computer as binary code (1’s and 0’s).
– Digital Thermometers: Temperatures are measured using sensors, and the temperature is displayed digitally on a screen with numbers.
– Digital Clock: Shows exact numbers, not a continuous spectrum like a mechanical clock does. The time changes from 1:30 to 1:31 with nothing in between.
