Today, we are going to be talking about the benefits and liabilities of the digitization of tickets, including baseball tickets, concert tickets, and more. In this day and age, most people have experienced how ticketing moved from physical to digital. In my mind, I feel as though this happened overnight. Let’s get right into to discussing this process.

I remember being about 8 years old, and my dad surprised my sisters and me with tickets to a Red Sox game. Since we don’t live in Massachusetts, this felt like a really big deal to me. I still have the ticket to this day, and it’s a physical representation of a happy memory in my life. The photo to the right isn’t the ticket I have, but it is as close as I could find.

When there is a physical ticket, it cannot be perfectly replicated. It’s unique in it’s physcial form. This uniqueness is a benefit of having physical tickets. In today’s world, there is so much corruption when it comes to tickets. In many instances, people have been scammed out of purchasing tickets online. These tickets were either fake or sold to multiple people, which means they are unusable. That is one benefit of physical tickets, and also a limitation of digital tickets.

Being a public health major myself, I am always concerned about access. When it comes to digital ticketing, the concern is that not all people have access to the digital world. People who don’t have this privilege have now lost the ability to buy tickets. There are certain events today where you can stand in line to buy a ticket, but the rate they sell at online makes this option less reliable.

However, the digital option allows for these tickets to be transferred easily. For example, I bought concert tickets for my friend and me. Before the concert, I had to transfer her ticket over to her phone so she could enter the arena. This process was very simple, and it took me less than a minute to transfer it. The simplicity of this process is a benefit of the digitization of tickets.

The image to the left shows a sample of what an online ticket could look like. Typically, they include the title of the concert or game and a QR code that is scanned at the door. In my opinion, this shows how inauthentic online tickets feel to the user.
